Throughout June we have been celebrating the Wine of Portugal.

We’ve enjoyed a wonderful celebration of the Wines of Portugal throughout June.

We have had tastings and offers in the shop and as part of our Secret Cellar tastings. We also celebrated Portuguese wine with 2 events, a “Portuguese Summer Tasting” and a Portuguese Wine Dinner at Stock Restaurant.

Many of you joined us for a live session on Instagram on Mon. 3rd June as Neal McAlindon joined Dr Jamie Goode for an engaging discussion through our featured selection of Portuguese wines.

On Saturday 8th June we hosted a sold-out event bringing 50 people together to join us for a “Portuguese Summer Tasting”.

The Stock Portuguese Wine Dinner took place on Thursday 20th June, there over 30 guests were treated to a superb 4 course menu created by Danny Miller.

On Saturday 8th June we hosted a sold-out event bringing 50 people together to join us for a “Portuguese Summer Tasting”. With our tasting room set with maps of Portugal’s winegrowing regions, tasting sheets and Portuguese flags, we were ready to dive in!

Susan our General Manager gave our introductions and concept of the tasting. Explaining Portugal’s rich winemaking history and guiding us through what we should expect today.

We tasted 6 amazing wines with Susan walking us through Porta 6 Vinho Verde 2022, Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2022 and Tinto de Talha Tinto 2022. With James delivering Morgado de Bucelas Arinto Branco 2022, Porta 6 Tinto 2021, Esperanca Escolha Tinto 2021

Each wine showing the diversity of the terroirs and winemaking skills from these fabulous producers.  During the tasting we had a quiz sheet set on the table for each guest to answer. With questions relating to Portuguese grapes, winemaking regions and history. One lucky winner won a Wines of Portugal Goodie Bag with some of the wines tasted on the day and Wines of Portugal merchandise.

A successful day bringing people together and exploring the amazing wines that Portugal has to offer and finding a new favourite bottle.

The Stock Portuguese Wine Dinner took place on Thursday 20th June, there over 30 guests were treated to a superb 4 course menu created by Danny Miller.

On Arrival we enjoyed a glass of the light and refreshing Porta 6 Vinho Verde.

The starter of Crab, Avocado, Coriander & Chili Tomato Dressing, Sourdough was paired with Adega Boas Quintas Morgado de Bucelas Arinto 2022. The crisp acidity, with citrus and mineral notes made this an excellent pairing with the sweetness of the crab and tomato.

The fish course of Prawn & Monkfish, Roast Red Pepper Rice, Parsley & Lemon was paired with Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2022. Coming from Monção and Melgaço, this a stunning example of Alvarinho, showing a richness and refinement, that made it a perfect foil for richness of the dish.

The main course of Piri Piri Short Rib Beef, Red Wine, Potato & Olive Oil, New Season Peas & Broad Beans was accompanied by Segur Estates Quinta da Esperanca from Alentejo. This ripe, juicy and generous red had an abundance of soft black berries and a hint of spice which worked well with the rich and savoury beef.

We finished with a gorgeous Baked Custard Tart, Local Strawberries, Orange Cream, this was paired with Graham’s Fine White Port. This may have seemed a little more unusual to some of the guests, but the delicate almond and citrus flavours made it a lovely pairing.

Thanks to Danny and the team at Stock for a memorable evening.

Throughout June we have been able to appreciate the styles, diversity, skill and value of Portuguese wine. We will definitely be enjoying more Portuguese wine throughout the summer and we hope you will be as well.
